Find out what version of Journler your have

If you've forgotten your password or Journler is no longer accepting a password you know is right you'll need to reset it. Resetting the password is a simple enough affair but the process depends on which version of Journler you have. Chances are you're running either Journler v2.0 or Journler 2.5 and higher. If you aren't sure what version you have, select Journler in the Finder by clicking on it once. From the File menu choose Get Info. You should find the version information under the first General heading.

Resetting your password in Journler v2.5

Journler uses a hidden file stored alongside the journal data to keep track of your password. When you move items in the Finder, hidden files are not moved with them. Knowing this it's very simple to reset the password. Because it is so simple, I don't recommend storing secure data in Journler. The program is not designed for it. If you require a secure journaling solution, check out the Securing Journler section.

Quit Journler and look in your Home folder > Library > Application Support. You'll find a folder called "Journler." If you do not find it, try looking in your Home > Documents folder. The "Journler" folder therein contains all of your journal data. Rename the folder to "Journler Copy." In the same directory, create a folder and call it "Journler." Make sure you are spelling it with a lowercase L and not an uppercase i. At this point you have two folders side by side, the one called "Journler Copy" with all your data and the new folder you just created called "Journler." Drag everything from the "Journler Copy" folder into the "Journler" folder. You've now moved all your data back into the folder where Journler looks for it, but you have left the password behind. Start Journler.

Alternatively you may use the following AppleScript to accomplish the same thing: Reset Journler Password AppleScript. Right click or ctrl-click on the link and choose "Save Linked File As...". Rename the file to "Reset Journler AppleScript.scpt and do not append the "txt" extension when asked. Save the file to your desktop and run it from there.

Resetting your password in Journler v2.0

Open the Keychain Access program in your /Applications/Utilities folder. On the left side of the window there will be either one or two panes. If there are two, make sure "login" is selected in the top Keychains pane. In the bottom pane make sure the "All Items" Category is selected.

Using the toolbar search and the top right of the window, search for "Journler." One of the returned matches should be Journler's login password. You may delete this item from the keychain by selecting it in the list and pressing the delete button.
